Celebrating 40 Years of Excellence: Cranfield Impact Centre’s Journey of Innovation and Impact
As Cranfield Impact Centre (CIC) celebrates 40 years of pioneering crash impact testing, it’s a moment to reflect on the incredible transformation that has shaped who we are today. From our origins as an academic department, we have evolved into a fully commercial company – a journey marked by curiosity, precision, and an unwavering commitment to safety.
“The biggest transformation at CIC? Evolving from an academic department into a fully commercial company.”
– Dr Jim Watson, Managing Director, Cranfield Impact Centre
Over the decades, we’ve expanded our testing capabilities across diverse sectors – from ice cream packaging to Formula 1 nose cones, from wheelchair safety to aircraft interiors. Our expertise spans:
- Wheelchairs, stretchers, and ambulance interiors
- Dog guards, harnesses, and motorcycle fuel tanks
- Ladders mounted on roof racks
- Automotive bumpers
- Sports cars, crash barriers, and motorsport data recorders
- Train interior tables and aircraft seating for civilian and military applications
- Steering column absorption systems and ejection seats
- Medical incubators for neonates
Each test we perform is grounded in meticulous preparation. While the execution may take mere seconds, the planning, setup, and precision engineering behind each trial can span weeks or months. This dedication is part of what makes our work so rewarding:
“One of my favourite moments at CIC? It’s got to be the coach rollover test — a highly technical challenge that brought together teams across Cranfield. Days of prep, seconds to execute, but incredibly rewarding teamwork!”
– Dr Jim Watson
Driving Safety Standards Forward
Crash testing has advanced enormously since our inception. Today’s tests are far more complex, featuring high-resolution digital imaging, sophisticated instrumentation, and evolving global standards. We remain at the forefront by maintaining strong relationships with regulators, from ISO working groups to the FIA. In fact, CIC has been central to developing safety standards since the first F1 nose cone tests – and we continue to be at forefront of crash testing.
“How do we stay relevant in a constantly changing market? By staying close to the regulators — from ISO working groups to the FIA. CIC has been at the forefront of safety standards since the first F1 nose cone tests, and we’ve provided an excepional service for our customers.”
– Dr Jim Watson
Looking Ahead: The Next 40 Years
What excites us about the future? It’s the variety and challenge that each new project brings. As industries change and transport options diversify, we anticipate entirely new materials and testing methodologies. We are proud to continue supporting the next generation of engineers, combining our commercial work with Cranfield’s world-class academic environment to deliver industry-leading testing facilities for student studies and innovation.
“From ice cream to F1, every year brings new challenges. Future transport could mean entirely new materials and testing methods — and we’re ready.”
– Dr Jim Watson
